Get Involved in the Kielder Challenge!
9th January 2010
This year we are running a Rotherham wide 'Kelder Challenge' activity with students from mainstream combining with their peers in the six special schools. All secondary schools have the opportunity to nominate students, either able bodied or with a disability to take part in this programme, which involves the following for students:
A day's disability awareness and problem solving day.
An am/pm session at the special school with whose children they will be competing with.
A days competitive challenge at a countryside venue in the region.
The winning two teams will represent Rotherham at the regional heats of the Kielder Challenge with the national top 12 teams going through to a four day final at Kielder Water in Northumberland.
Kielder challenge is an inclusive national outdoor adventure competition which has been running over twenty years. It involves outdoor problem solving activities that test the skills of a team to work together, communicate, plan and evaluate. Most importantly, the Challenge is fully inclusive and open to all young people (Y8-Y11).
The activities challenge teams of eight 13 to 16 year olds, four with and four without disabilities (*4+4). All team members can play an active role in solving the challenges and inclusion for all is a key goal for each team. For some students we have found the Challenge and the work with friends in special school to be a life changing experience.
