The role of the Competition Manager is to provide a School Sport Competition Structure consisting of local delivery leading to county, regional and national competitions in the 21 Sports with a National Competition Framework. There is now a Competition Manager in every County in England with the aim to increase participation in high quality competition and produce life long participation in sport.

The sports have been introduced in phases; for the 2009-10 academic year, there are 13 priority sports. The priority sports and age groups are:

Y5/6 Sportshall Athletics	Y7-11 Rugby Union
U14 and U16 Boys and Girls Badminton	U13 & U16 Table Tennis
U14 Boys and Girls Basketball	Y3/4 Mini Red Tennis & U13/15 Tennis
Y5/6 Kwik Cricket & U13/15 Inter Cricket	Aquasplash Swimming Festivals
Y3/4 & Y5/6 Key Steps Gymnastics	Y7-11 Rugby League (not a priority for Rotherham)
Y5/6 Mini Hockey/Quicksticks	Volleyball (not a priority for South Yorkshire)
Y5/6 High Five Netball

As a county, we are also working to create a sustainable competition system for the following sports:

Trampolining KS3/4
Rounders (Y6 mixed, Y9 mixed, Y10/11 girls)
Cheerleading (KS3/4)
Disability Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball, Football, Athletics and Table Tennis (KS3/4) Swimming (upper KS2)
Indoor Rowing

In the 2008-9 Academic year, Rotherham was represented in more County Finals than ever before in more sports, through the clearer competition structures and pathways outlined by the Competition Manager.
